Synopsis

Inspired by true events, Opal is a stylistically daring feature film that brings to light one of the west coast’s true maverick women, Opal Whitley. Raised in a logging camp at the turn of the twentieth century, Opal catapults to fame with the publication of her childhood nature journals, then to infamy when readers begin to suspect a hoax. While the questions concerning her diary have yet to be resolved, the film rides the tension between truth and fiction, and presents a character who embodies the possibilities of both.

Winner of the Robin Eickman Screenwriting Award from Film Arts Foundation, the film is a tribute to the west coast ‘s redwood-studded landscape, iconoclastic spirit, and independent women. Opal was a spiritual environmentalist before her time, and her growing international fan base has made her the subject of at least nine books, several plays and a musical. Recently Opal’s writing has been translated into Italian, French, German and Chinese, yet there has never been a feature film about her life – until now.
